2020 is the year of SUVs. With the consumer shift away from sedans, Ford's engineering has been focused on making SUVs roomier, safer, and more efficient than ever. The all-new 2020 Ford Escape is just one example of Ford's latest innovations. Here are the main differences between each Escape trim level to help you better choose your next Ford SUV.

ew 2020 Ford Escape S

New 2020 Ford Escape S

The base Escape trim comes with many standard features you won't find on other compact SUV base models. The three-cylinder, 180-horsepower turbocharged engine is peppy enough for daily drivers and highway commuters. Though standard with front wheel drive, the S trim is available with all-wheel drive, a relative rarity for base models in its class.

Tech features on the base Escape S include the popular SYNC infotainment with a 4.2” screen and six speakers. A standard USB port allows device charging and connection for music, hands-free calling, and more. Standard cloth upholstery keeps the cabin simple and functional.

Best of all, the 2020 Ford Escape S comes with an impressive amount of safety features. As part of the Ford CoPilot 360, the S trim comes standard with:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear view camera
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Curve control
  • Lane keep assist
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Automatic emergency braking

New 2020 Ford Escape SE

The next step up is the Escape SE trim. This trim includes all of the S features plus some additional standard upgrades.

In the cabin, you'll find more comfort features, such as standard power-adjusting driver's seat, heated front seats, and automatic climate control. The technology also sees a boost, with the upgrade to SYNC3 infotainment with an 8” touchscreen, satellite radio, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity all standard.

Like the S, the SE also comes standard with front wheel drive and an option for all-wheel drive. A panoramic moon roof is available, and the CoPilot 360 suite can be upgraded to include adaptive cruise control and navigation.

The SEL also allows you to upgrade to the four-cylinder, 250-horsepower EcoBoost engine for extra power and performance. The AWD remains as a paid upgrade, as well as the options for adaptive cruise control, navigation, and moonroof.

The best of the best comes on the Escape Titanium. This top-tier trim level comes standard with a hybrid powertrain with 198-horsepower and CVT automatic transmission technology. Like the SEL, you can also upgrade to the EcoBoost engine and all-wheel drive.

The interior of the Titanium gets the full suite of luxury features, including the additions of genuine leather seating, power-adjustable passenger seat, 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Co-Pilot 360 package is expanded to include lane centering assist, evasive steering assist, and parallel and perpendicular parking assist. You can opt for a heads-up display for a techie feature normally found only on luxury vehicles and sports cars.

The 2020 Ford Escape comes with two engine options. The unusual three-cylinder option maximizes fuel efficiency without sacrificing power. In fact, this base engine can achieve a 0-60 mph time of just 8.4 seconds, making it more than enough for highway driving. The upgraded four-cylinder comes in at 6.9 seconds with standard all-wheel drive and enough torque to tow 3,500 lbs. Both engines are paired with a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission.

  • Three-cylinder, 180-horsepower EcoBoost turbocharged engine (with 190 lb-ft of torque)
  • Four-cylinder, 250-horsepower turbocharged engine (with 280 lb-ft of torque)

Your 2020 Ford Escape can be equipped with front-wheel or all-wheel drive on every trim level. Of course, all-wheel drive will deliver the most power and control to your SUV.

The standard front-wheel drive gets better fuel economy than AWD or rear-wheel drive and can maintain good traction in rainy or snowy conditions compared to rear-wheel drive SUVs.
