Ford wants to help researchers and programmers better understand how cars, bikes and other styles of conveyance can work together to produce new mobility solutions to enrich people’s lives.
With this goal in mind, Ford traveled to the rural areas of The Gambia, a remote West African country surrounded by Senegal, where residents depend on Riders for Health to deliver medical services they badly need. The not-for-profit, nongovernmental organization manages a fleet of more than 1,700 vehicles, used solely for health care and other public services. The group concentrates its efforts in regions where no prevalent network of vehicle-maintenance services exist. These places include Liberia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya, and Malawi. The Gambia’s spotty infrastructure and a strong rainy season means dirt roads are being completely washed away. In many places the roads are so fragmented, The Gambian government doesn’t know where they are. That’s why Riders for Health asked Ford to help improve how they operate their vehicles. So far, Riders for Health has delivered health care access to approximately 21.5 million people.
